It was a long jog.
Carl, Jamayrah, Jopay, Ptr. Keith and I trailed heading to Mahayag “Sea of Clouds“, President Roxas, early this morning. It was a risky-for-the-heart trek since the road is kind of steep. We just managed to walk most of the time. The road was not easy, I have to be honest. It was honestly tiring. TIRING would be the right word to describe it, indeed. Not to mention the huge commercial truck which happened to pass by on us, and brutally blew up all its fumes for our body to embrace.
We dared to continue despite the unfriendly road. By the time we arrived there, it was already sunrise and as we gazed at the white clouds being mantled on the mountain peaks, I have realized how simple scenery can make up someone’s mind. It is like an ocean of clouds that leads to eternity.
We had a small talk about our trip there, sitting at an abandoned coconut stem. A question broke from Ptr. Keith that went,
“Isn’t it amazing how this world, fallen as it is, but God’s glory still manifests?”
Yes, it makes sense. But as we went along with the talk he shared what the apostle Paul said in one of his letters,
However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” — the things God has prepared for those who love him.
–1 Corinthians 2:9 (New International Version)
He told us that if we already look at the sea of clouds as something that catches our breath, how much more about the “things” that GOD prepared for those who love HIM? Okay, we were led to the thought of not focusing on the “things” that GOD prepared, but the idea went on to the important part where, “to those who love HIM.” We could not probably witness the “things” He prepared unless we “love Him”. Do you get the point? And so, such led to the intriguing question of the day,
“How would you know if you love God?”

“By adoring His creation.” Jopay said.
“You put Him on your heart.” Carl spoke.
“You just feel it.” Jamayrah added.
I simply told him,
“I would know I love God if I seek Him.”
Then there he told us that we can love the creation but hate the Creator. Same as we love the painting, but hate the painter. You can say you have Him on your heart, but you do not walk the talk. It is easy to “feel” God within you, but emotions aren’t guaranteed, and seeking God might not mean we love Him, because we might be seeking Him out of cheap curiosity. To love God in a legitimate way, it is imperative to carry our cross daily. To not entertain our worldly and lustful ways. To obey Him by means of denying ourselves. That’s it. No more, no less.
What he told us that day was a mind-changing thought for me to hear. True, sometimes I thought to love God is by means of reading His Word alone or playing a Christian song in the background. But there is more to that, though these being mentioned are vital ways to grow our relationship with Him, they are not really the core of it. We know we love God if we are ready to forget our own desires that have something to do with feeding our flesh and passion. We know we love God if we are trying to control ourselves from the things that could lead us to sin. We know we love God if we come to not pattern our lives in the standard of the world, but of His Word, and to obey Him, and not just obeying Him, but in obeying Him, there is that cross that we carry in our everyday lives that instead of focusing our attention on our own selfish ways, we give Him the laser focus instead, and to abstain from anything that would drag us away from Him.
Sure it is hard, but following Jesus has never been easy.
just like the unfriendly road we went through going at the sea of clouds, it reminds me of a metaphor of the reality of the Christian life.
It never promises an easy road, it is awfully hard, but it is honestly worth the journey as it leads to the everlasting life.
