Once In A Lifetime

Have you ever thought about the phrase, “once in a lifetime”? Lately I have been thinking about it. Every life’s milestones of a person, let us say graduating in kindergarten, elementary, high school, and even college, are educational milestones. They might be all ceremonies of getting your diploma, but they differ with their levels & of course challenges in getting there. A kindergarten diploma is nothing like a college degree diploma where the experiences & feelings in that moment totally vary. So, it made me think, graduating in kindergarten is a once in a lifetime experience coz you will never have to pass that way again! You get me?

My mom and I were talking in the living room one afternoon, and talked about what my age will be during Year 3000. There’s a song by Jonas Brothers ‘Year 3000’, so it paved me asking about it. Then the rabbit hole of the certainty of mortality met us. By that time, we are all gonna die. Maybe all of us who are here in this year are all dust. So, it started to creep into me that every single milestone we do here on earth, as in now, is precious as it is literally once in a lifetime. Not gonna happen again, ever. If you’re in the season of turning 18, go and have the celebration you desire. Not to make it expensive, but something you really want, and when you are 80 one day, you will look back and look at the 18th birthday cake you so desired. This same goes for when you are graduating this year in college, make sure you enjoy the day as much as you have put much effort throughout the 4 years.

If you are preparing for a wedding, enjoy it to the core most especially when the day arrives, as this is a beautiful once in a lifetime celebration. That is why we celebrate birthdays every year, not that it is really every year obviously, but it is one way to celebrate you turning a different age as the year moves on. Hello, you are never going to be 21 again. And I love that I came to think such phrase deeply. Coz every day, I look forward to the milestone that there is and cannot do anything but accept it with open arms & have pleasure with it as one day it will just pass. So, if you booked a flight somewhere far away, bought that ticket to your favorite band, or simply celebrated a family reunion this year, make sure to make it count. These events might be reoccurring (like fam reunion or traveling), but your age & the people you celebrate it with are changing as the year passes. So technically, it is still a once in a lifetime event.

But with the real once in a lifetime celebrations, especially, you know, getting into adulthood & exploring new seasons in life, especially those things that have something to do with you aging, I hope it gets the celebration it truly deserves, no matter how simple it is, so long it is genuine & intentional. For we will never pass this way again. Finally, the book of Ecclesiastes has a say and what it tries to point out, to have pleasure with what we have, but of course with discretion.

And you know what’s important, I mean really important in the book of Ecclesiastes? It’s the last verses.

So we are faced with a chance to make this life worthwhile, of course this is a fallen world, and when you are a Christian, you know we are just but a pilgrim here. So, if you are searching for meaning and do not want to strive after the wind, it will always boil down to your reverence to GOD, because it is the only rightful way as to how to navigate this life we have in a meaningful sense. Yes, we have but one life and seasonal milestones that are passing once in this lifetime, and to make it precise, we are only but a moment, we only have 24 hours technically coz we do not know what tomorrow brings. Only in revering GOD and living in eternal view in sight can we make sense of this one life here on earth in the other side of eternity.
